The base plate has to fold as the mouth of the pot will be too small for the diameter of the plate to come out. Nobody seems to do #jarrealacorde let’s do a revival. The liberating messy splat feels amazing. Pouring glaze and letting gravity add its influence over the runs adds a natural tint to the piece. I’ll fire this one soon having dried out the kiln today. Found out I’ve been accepted for @celebratingceramics in July, a lovely way to end the year. HNY when it comes 💫

Wood firing face! We are done for the years wood firing with @oxforduniversitykilns it feels like a very long time to wait for opportunities to go again next year. It’s good to be patient and work it out slowly, it ought to be like a box of chocolates you wait for until you can’t wait any longer. Our crew fired 2 fast fires in Feb/Jun/Sep and some of the results were off the chart amazing. It is such an addictive draw to improve - to experiment further, to network, to help, to experience, to be part of it all. Sincere thanks for the hard work to establish such a cohesive, inclusive movement in this space by @oxforduniversitykilns 👍💫💪

Firing this weekend with @oxforduniversitykilns it’s a heady mix of teamwork, hardwork, woodwork. You know it’s working when four individuals bring a load of pots each and just 3 are left over after stacking. The loose arrangement of small and medium pots means the stack can be really efficient and LOADS more pots can go in as a result. @imogen_charleston_ceramics has the ‘plate shel’ this time so watch this space. ‘Christmas eve’ excited, 🤩. With thanks to @robinwaldenceramics for all the generosity of knowledge transfer, thanks to @neilhotchin for the muscle with the trailer today. 🔥 with enormous thanks to @robin.a.wilson enabling us and all the potters on the site, massively appreciated , a herculean effort. @oxforduniversitykilns #oxforduniversitykilns #woodfiring

Proud moment. Towering over the little pots being prepared for wood firing this weekend is the Jarre a la corde with the rope and armature removed. There were two patches where the body thickness was very thin and being well adhered to the rope broke through when removing the rope, however, I trust my repair will adequately patch, they are invisible from the outside. Another learning to chalk up. This is about a bag of clay, so 12 kilos or thereabouts - wet. For the scale of the piece it feels very light - even at this soft end of leather hard stage. I do hope it makes it. For those who crossed their fingers for me - thank you, that worked. ‘Shield’ studio shadows to die for #jarrealacorde

Jarre a la corde. Third attempt. Thanks to @tom_demeranville for v9g clay suggestion. Same as last attempt except addition of propane and experience. I have paid the penance of the reclaim task with slight benefit of a stiffer mix. Cross everything for me 😅

Jarre a la corde. Very satisfying to get to this stage after a failure on the first attempt. @motylpottery you are so generous with your experience and I’m so very grateful for you passing on the knowledge. This pot will just fit in my kiln and will be the largest piece I can fire. It may well deliver a few learnings still and perhaps I’ll need to start again (again), but I’m loving the journey and determined to make a large piece in this way. If you are familiar with this technique do let me know when I should take the ribs and rope out 🤣😅 #jarrealacorde #bigpots

Preparations continue for end of Sept wood firing. It’s a balance between freaking out I’ve not enough and taking time and care about what I do make. Very happy with these boxes so far, I’ve learnt that thickness is required for minimal distortion, I’m hoping a middle to back position in the chamber to shelter them somewhat and am considering using the horizontal nature of the lid in combination with the melt for something a little special, watch this space 💫

And so the cycle starts again. The motivation of having a firing at the end of Sept is fabulous, such a great focus. The inspiration of past pieces and successful glaze/clay/kiln placement combos is bubbling in my mind. I made today, ES5 just a very short run, but with intent and a yearning for that raw clay blush delivered by wood fire. Almost there with the wood, about 90% probably, found a great new source 💫
